With research constantly evolving, cannabis producers are advertising for more than just THC and CBD in products. THC and CBD are only two of the hundreds of cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, so it makes sense that some “new” cannabinoids are trending for their effects. Delta-8 and CBN are a couple of popular cannabinoids we are seeing hype around.
The legality of Delta-8 products has been a topic of debate across the country because it comes from hemp, not cannabis (and therefore may fall under the 2018 Farm Bill). The cannabinoid Delta-8 (Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol) is similar to THC but without a strong psychoactive effect. Research has shown that Delta-8 may be better for decreasing nausea than THC and CBD, a huge benefit in the medicinal market. It has also been shown to reduce anxiety.
CBN (cannabinol) comes from the THC cannabinoid as it ages. It is not known to cause the ‘high’ feeling but is considered mildly psychoactive. When cannabis flower is harvested and tested, the THC percent at that time will decrease with age. So, the higher the percent of CBN, the lower the THC content. CBN is often found in manufactured products because converting THC to CBN can also be sped up by adding heat to THC. CBN does have similar effects to THC; it can be anti-inflammatory, reduce seizures, and help insomnia.
